Responding to the Government's Challenge for Specialist Doctors, MWA Unhas Approves the Opening of a Subspecialty Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology

Makassar, February 11, 2026 – On Wednesday (11/2), the Board of Trustees (MWA) of Hasanuddin University approved the opening of a Subspecialty Study Program (Sp.2) in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Unhas. The approval was given during the MWA Meeting held in Meeting Room A on the 4th floor of the Unhas Rectorate Building.
The meeting was chaired by the Chair of the MWA and attended by MWA members, university leaders, and the Task Force Team for the establishment of the FK Unhas Orthopedics and Traumatology Subspecialty Study Program.
In his opening remarks, the MWA Chair emphasized that discussions at the MWA level were more focused on non-academic aspects, including management, human resource readiness, facilities and infrastructure, and the financial sustainability of the study program. The MWA stressed the importance of the new program’s independence to avoid continuous reliance on university support, especially amid limited government funding transfers to PTNBH.
The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs said that the opening of this study program is part of the government’s mandate and acceleration program to meet the need for specialists and subspecialists in Indonesia. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Unhas explained that the opening of the Orthopedic and Traumatology Subspecialty Study Program is a response to urgent national needs. Currently, the number of orthopedic subspecialists in Indonesia is still very limited compared to the population and the complexity of cases. Unhas, as a university mandated to serve Eastern Indonesia, is considered to have adequate human resources and clinical case experience to organize this program.
The Task Force team explained that Unhas has competent subspecialist lecturers, supported by facilities and infrastructure at the Unhas Teaching Hospital, as well as a large pool of potential students from orthopedic specialist alumni.
In principle, the MWA approved the opening of the Orthopedic and Traumatology Subspecialty Program at the Unhas Faculty of Medicine, with the condition that improvements be made in the near future. This program is expected to become a center of excellence that not only contributes to improving health services in Eastern Indonesia but is also capable of competing nationally and internationally.
With this agreement, Unhas reaffirms its commitment to supporting the government’s strategic programs in the health sector and strengthening its role as an adaptive, responsive, and globally competitive higher education institution.
