Finalization of Rector Selection Policy, MWA Discusses Opportunities for Candidates from Outside Unhas

Makassar, June 10, 2025 — The Unhas MWA held another Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Tuesday (10/6) as part of the process of refining the MWA regulations on the mechanism for electing the next Rector. The FGD, held at the Unhas Hotel and Convention Center, was attended by several key campus figures who are also members of the MWA Regulation Drafting Team on the Procedures for Electing the Rector for 2026-2030, including Prof. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, Prof. Nasaruddin Salam, Secretary of Unhas, Prof. Sumbangan Baja, Chair of the Academic Senate (SA), Prof. Bahruddin Thalib, Secretary of the SA, Prof. Budimawan, Chair of the Board of Professors (DGB), Prof. Andi Pangerang Moentha, as well as the leadership and members of the Unhas MWA.
One important point that emerged was the removal of one of the administrative requirements in the selection process for rector candidates. The removal of this requirement aims to open up wider opportunities for rector candidates from outside Unhas, including those who do not have a background as lecturers or civil servants.
However, this openness is still accompanied by caution. The FGD agreed that the requirements for rector candidates must still follow the rules set out in the Unhas Statute. The provisions in Article 26 of the Unhas Statute regarding the requirements to become a rector stipulate that those who can register as rector candidates are civil servant lecturers with a doctoral degree (S3), hold a position of at least senior lecturer at the time of applying to become a rector candidate, and are no older than 60 (sixty) years of age at the end of the term of office of the current rector.
The discussion also touched on the need to review the Unhas Statute, particularly the articles that overly restrict rector candidates to only lecturers and civil servants. By adopting a more inclusive approach, Unhas is expected to be able to attract more diverse and innovative leadership candidates.
This FGD is part of Unhas’ commitment to continuously improve its democratic, open, and accountable campus leadership system. The results of the FGD will serve as important material in formulating technical guidelines for the selection and election of the next Unhas rector.
